Ribes or Flowering Currants are flowering and fruiting plants that are members of the Grossulariaceae or gooseberry family. They are native to many of the temperate part of the northern hemisphere.

What is a Ribes?

Ribes are hardy plants that vary between 0.5m and over 2m tall. They are grown for their colourful spring displays of flowers in white, yellow, green, pink and red which are followed by masses of edible classic currant fruits again in many colours including black, blue, green, red, white and yellow. Ribes provide an important food source for birds, bees and other pollinators as well as fruits for the table or preserving.

Where to plant Ribes?

Ribes can be grown in full sun or partial shade with a moist but well drained soil. They are best suited to garden borders mixed with other bulbs and plants. Ribes can also be used as flowering and fruiting hedges or screening plants.

How to care for Ribes?

Ribes are easy plants to look after once established. Water young plants in dry spells. Prune Ribes grown just for their flowers straight after flowering. A mulch in spring will promote strong growth. Ribes grown for their fruit should be pruned in autumn or winter by removing the weaker shoots at ground level.
