Phormium or New Zealand Flax are colourful evergreen shrubs that are members of the Asphodelaceae family. They are native to New Zealand.
What is a Phormium?
Phormium are hardy evergreen plants with beautiful arching sword like leaves. They grow to between 0.5 and 2m in height. Phormium have beautiful often multi coloured leave blades in hues of green, yellow, bronze, orange, pink, red, purple and sometimes black. Mature plants may have striking yellow, orange or red flowers carried high above the foliage.
Where to plant Phormium?
Phormium like full sun or partial shade and a moist but well drained soil. They make great exotic looking patio plants and colourful feature plants in garden borders.
How to care for Phormium?
Phormium are easy plants to look after. Water young and pot grown plants in dry spells. Remove old flower stalks and dead or damaged foliage. Mulching or liquid feeding in spring will help promote strong growth.
