Escallonia are flowering mainly evergreen shrubs or small trees from the family Escallonaceae. They are native to North and South America.

What is an Escallonia?

Escallonia are hardy to slightly frost tender bushy plants ranging in height from less than 1m tall to over 4m tall. Escallonia are grown for their glossy green foliage and colourful flowers. Some forms offer golden, red or variegated leaves. Escallonia flower all summer in shades of white, pink and red. Their flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators.

Where to plant Escallonia?

Escallonia like full sun or partial shade and a moist but well drained soil. Frost tender forms need shelter from cold winds. Smaller forms may be grown as patio pots with larger forms making showy feature plants in borders. Escallonia also make colourful flowering hedges as they respond well to regular clipping.

How to care for Escallonia?

Escallonia are easy plants to look after. Water young or pots grown plants during dry spells. Prune plants or hedges after flowering season has finished. Regular liquid feeding in late spring and summer will promote stronger flowering. Move container grown plants to a shelter frost free spot in cold winters.
