Deutzia are flowering shrubs, mainly deciduous, that are members of the hydrangea family. Many are native to China but there are some that occur in other parts of Asia, Central America and Europe.

What is a Deutzia?

Deutzia vary in height from 0.5m to over 3m tall with leaf shapes varying from quite narrow to broad and colour from deep to pale green in spring and summer. As autumn approaches the foliage will often turn attractive shades of bronze and purple. Deutzia have masses of flowers in large clusters during late spring and summer with colours in whites, pinks, reds, and purples. The flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators.

Where to plant Deutzia?

Deutzia are adaptable plants which will grow well in full sun or partial shade and in a wide range of soil types. Smaller forms less than 1m tall could be grown in patio pots but most Deutzia will be best grown in the garden border in small groups or perhaps as individual feature plants.

How to care for a Deutzia?

Deutzia are easy plants to care for. Water young or pots grown plants in dry spells. Once established prune straight after flowering each year to keep a good shape and to remove old wood. Deutzia flower on the previous years growth so do not leave this too late. A high potash liquid feed in spring will boost flowering.
