Cotinus or Smoke Bush are flowering deciduous shrubs or small trees that are members of the Anacardiaceae family and a closely related to sumacs. They are native to southern Europe, central Asia, the Himalayas and northern China.
What is a Cotinus?
Cotinus are hardy plants that vary in height, small forms may only be 1m to 2m tall but many will make 5m or more. Cotinus have attractive foliage with rounded leaves in shades of green or yellow, orange, red and purple depending on the variety chosen. Foliage colours become more intense in autumn with beautiful autumnal hues. Cotinus are known as smoke bushes because of the masses of tiny flowers carried above the foliage in feathery or smoky plumes of pink, gold or purple.
Where to plant Cotinus?
Cotinus will be happy in full sun or partial shade and a moist but well drained soil. Small Cotinus can be grown in pots patio plants but larger ones are best used as feature plants in garden borders.
How to care for Cotinus?
Cotinus are easy plants to look after. Water young and pots grown plants during dry spells. Cotinus should make bushy plants with out much pruning but if plants need reshapeing prune in late winter or early spring. Mulching with garden compost in spring will also promote healthy growth.
