Baptisia or False Indigo are flowering perennial plants from the Fabaceae family. They are native to the prairie regions of central and eastern USA.
What is a Baptisia?
Baptisia are hardy upright fairly tall plants between 0.5m and 1.5m tall with blue green or silvery grey foliage and attractive spikes of blue, purple or yellow flowers over a long flowering season.
Where to plant Baptisia?
Baptisia prefer full sun and well drained soil. They are useful in prairie and cottage garden style planting where they will add a long lasting splash of colour.
How to care for Baptisia?
Baptisia are easy plants to look after once established. Water young plants during dry spells. A light trim to shorten leggy plants and remove old flowers and foliage during the growing season will promote fresh growth and flowers. The foliage will die back after the first frosts and can be tidied up in early spring.
