Abelia are flowering deciduous or evergreen shrubs related to honeysuckle that are native to eastern Asia and Mexico

What is an Abelia?

Abelia are hardy shrubs that range in height from 0.5m to over 4m tall. Abelia are grown for their attractive foliage in colours from glossy dark green to striking golden variegations. Abelia also have a long flowering season during the summer when their scented tubular flowers attract bees and other pollinators.

Where to plant Abelia?

Abelia prefer a sheltered sunny or lightly shaded spot with moist but well drained soil. Smaller forms are ideal for patio pots or planting in the front of a border to add a splash of foliage colour and fragrance. Larger Abelias with their attractive foliage and long flowering period make ideal feature plants in borders.

How to care for an Abelia?

Water pot grown and young plants during dry spells. Evergreen Abelia should only require a light trim in early spring to keep a good shape and allow new growth before flowering. Deciduous Abelia are best pruned after flowering.
