Plant Information

Pseudopanax Rangitira is a native plant from New Zealand where it is called Houpara. A compact bushy shrub with deep purple almost black palmate leaves which are darkest in full sun, this variety is a recent introduction and was selected for its compact habit and very attractive serrated leaves. In summer mature plants may carry unusual yellowish green flowers in compound upright umbels.

Pseudopanax Rangitira is a dwarf variety which is best grown in the front of a sheltered border or better still in a patio container that can be overwintered in a cold greenhouse or conservatory. In cold winters the tips may be damaged by frost but it will regrow in the spring. Can be grown in a pot and overwintered in a cool greenhouse in colder areas, protect from winter winds.
