Osteospermum or African Daisies are flowering perennial plants from the Asteraceae or daisy family. They are native to southern Africa and the Arabian peninsula.
What is an Osteospermum?
Osteospermum are low growing clump forming and sometimes spreading half hardy perennials that will tolerate a light frost. They have narrow green leaves and stunning large daisy-like flowers during summer and early autumn with beautiful colours ranging from white through pinks to purples.
Where to plant Osteospermum?
Osteospermum like full sun and well drained soil. They can be grown in patio pots or garden borders where they help create cottage, gravel, coastal or Mediterranean gardens. In colder parts of the country shelter from cold winds or grow in pots that can be moved to a frost free area over winter.
How to care for an Osteospermum?
Osteospermums are easy plants to grow. Water pot grown and young plants during dry spells. Remove spent flowers and give a regular high potash liquid feed to boost flowering. Cut back old foliage in early spring to encourage fresh new growth.
