Hosta or Plantain Lilies are shade tolerant foliage perennials that are members of the Asparagaceae family. They are native to north east Asia.

What is a Hosta?

Hosta are hardy plants that range in height from less than 0.5m to just over 1m tall. Hosta are grown for their colourful foliage with large leaves which are green, bluish green or yellow and in some forms these colours will be in a mixed variegation. In summer attractive purple or white flowers are carried above the foliage in some varieties these will be scented.

Where to plant Hosta?

Hosta love the shade, either dappled or full shade and a moist but well drained soil. Hosta can be grown in patio pots or garden borders. They add a splash of colour to light up a shady area.

How to care for Hosta?

Hosta are easy plants to look after. Water young and pot grown plants during dry spell. Remove dead or damaged foliage and divide large clumps if they get too big. Slugs and snails can be a problem. There are a range of products available to control slugs, home made beer traps and keeping a rough gritty surface around plants are said to work well.
