Epimedium or Barrenwort or sometimes Fairy Wings are flowering perennial plants from the Berberidaceae family. They are found in mainly in China with some from Asia and the Mediterranean.
What is an Epimedium?
Epimedium are hardy low growing plants usually under 0.5m in height. They are grown for their attractive foliage which emerges in spring. The leaves can be green, bronze, red or purple and may have marbled patterns. Delicate star shaped flowers on thin stalks are carried above the foliage in spring. The flowers can be white, yellow, orange, pink, red or purple.
Where to plant Epimedium?
Epimedium like a sheltered spot with light dappled shade and a moist but well drained soil. They can be grown in pots but are probably best used in the garden border where they can help create a cottage garden feel or perhaps as an underplanting for large shrubs or small trees.
How to care for Epimedium?
Epimedium are fairly easy to look after. Water pot grown and young plants in dry spells. Tidy up dead or damaged foliage in later winter by cutting back hard. Mulching with garden compost before new foliage and flowers emerge in the spring will also help promote growth and flowers.
