Echinops, or hedgehog cactus, is an evergreen perennial that thrives in sun or partial shade. Its small, spiny stems are covered in needle-like leaves with pointed tips. It flowers profusely in late summer when it bears star-shaped purple flowers of equal size on top of the spines, clustered together in hedgehog-like spheres. The plant blooms from spring to Autumn and can withstand short periods of frost, but will die back to the ground under cold conditions, but don’t panic, they will reappear next spring. Echinops is a very popular choice for gardeners due to its hardiness and unusual shape.
