Blechnum or Hard Ferns are mainly evergreen ferns from the Blechnaceae family. They are native to the UK Europe and other regions of the northern hemisphere.

What is a Blechnum?

Blechnum are largely hardy ferns but there are some which are frost tender which can be grown as conservatory or house plants so careful selection of varieties is required. They have attractive upright green foliage which can sometimes be bronzed and can be 0.5m to 1.5m tall.

Where to plant Blechnum?

Blechnum require a sheltered spot with full or partial shade and moist but well drained slightly acidic soil. They add an exotic look to a garden whether in patio pots or planted in garden borders.

How to care for Blechnum?

Blechnum are easy to look after if planted in the right place. Water young and pot grown plants in dry spells and mist the foliage of more established plants. Blechnum should need little trimming just remove and dead or damaged fronds.
